Tarangire national park is the sixth largest national park in Tanzania located about 120 kilometers away from Arusha town; one outstanding feature of this park is the huge number of enormous big baobab trees –these giants known as upside down trees are a strange and a wonderful sight on their own. The word Tarangire was derived from two tribal words “Tara” which means river and “Wire” which means warthog which all these words together mean the river of warthogs so the park itself owes its name to Tarangire river which flows across the area and attracts high number of migrant animals in the dry season when many migratory wildlife species come back to the permanent water of Tarangire river. This park covers an area of 2850 kilometers square which is affine home to variety of game and a year-round availability of water attracts great number of bird species, huge herds of wildebeests, elands, Zebras, Oryx, and elephants also gather in Tarangire until the start of new rain season when they can migrate to other good grazing lands while the abandoned termite mounds often house mongoose colonies in the park. When to visit the park
The park is accessible throughout a year but “The dry season”, from late June to October, is the best time for a Tanzania safari in Tarangire National Park. Most of the animals migrate out of the park during the wet season (November when there are possibilities or rains and from mid-march to May) and wildlife viewing is not as good during that rain seasons.
