Wildebeest migration is a continuous and awe-inspiring natural event that takes place throughout the year, following various routes and patterns. Every year, millions of wildebeests, accompanied by hundreds of thousands of zebras and other migratory predators, journey across the Serengeti plains in search of fresh grazing lands and water. This epic migration is the largest land-based movement of animals, driven purely by their natural instincts. The migration forms a perpetual cycle, rotating between Tanzania and Kenya’s Maasai Mara, offering one of the most spectacular natural experiences and a true wonder of the world. Throughout this challenging journey, the wildebeests face numerous threats. Many lose their lives to predators or succumb to exhaustion and starvation, while others are born into this fight for survival. The migration is often regarded as one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World and is the greatest wildlife spectacle on Earth. Travelers on a migration safari have a unique opportunity to follow the path of the wildebeests, zebras, and other migratory species in the Serengeti National Park, experiencing different aspects of this incredible journey throughout the year. From November to December, the herds gather in the southern Serengeti, where the onset of rain provides fresh grazing pastures. From January to March, the southern Serengeti and Ndutu region become prime locations to witness the calving season, as thousands of wildebeest calves are born. This period also attracts a high number of predators, including lions, leopards, cheetahs, hyenas, and carnivorous birds, who take advantage of the newborns and weakened mothers. Between April and June, the herds begin moving towards the western corridors of the Serengeti, passing through the Ndoha and Dutwa plains near the Mbalageti River. June marks the beginning of the mating season, where fierce battles between bulls can be observed as they compete for the attention of females. From July to October, the herds advance towards the northern Serengeti, seeking greener pastures in the Maasai Mara Nature Reserve. By August, they face the daunting challenge of crossing the Grumeti and Mara Rivers, where crocodiles and other predators await. Despite these obstacles, the herds press on, with some remaining in the northern Serengeti while others spread across the Maasai Mara. As September and October approach, the main challenges of the migration subside, and the herds begin their return journey southward, once again braving the Mara River.
