Rubondo Island Camp is nestled within Rubondo Island National Park, situated in the southwest corner of Lake Victoria, the world’s second-largest freshwater lake. Positioned roughly 150 km west of Mwanza, the island is accessible by a combination of air travel or road and boat transfer from Mwanza. This camp offers an immersive experience in Africa’s largest island national park, featuring a stunning lakefront location and eco-friendly, luxurious cottages discreetly set in the lush indigenous forest. With just eight handcrafted cottages, each situated 10 to 20 meters apart, the camp ensures a harmonious blend with its pristine environment using traditional techniques and local materials. The elevated dining and lounge area, set amidst an outcrop of rocks and scattered trees, provides magnificent views of the lake and bay. Nearby, a swimming pool surrounded by decking is conveniently located close to the beach and common areas. Guests can enjoy a range of eco-conscious activities, including forest walks, game viewing, bird watching, canoeing, trekking in chimpanzee habitats, and catch-and-release fishing. Rubondo Island also safeguards vital fish breeding grounds across its eleven smaller islands, supporting species like the tilapia, a key food source for the yellow-spotted otters, and the Nile perch, some of which exceed 100 kg.
