Kitulo National Park

Kitulo national park in the southern highlands of Tanzania has a spectacular montane grassland and forest in the Kitulo plateau that local people refer it as Bustani ya Mungu “The Garden of God”, the botanists and some tourists have nicknamed it the Serengeti of Flowers. Kitulo national park is one of its kind in the Africa covering and area of 412.9 Km² lying in Mbeya and Njombe region in Tanzania, it hosts to ‘one of the great floral spectacles of the world where wildflowers, birds and harmonious grass eating mammals are dominating the region. This rear and astonishing botanical plateau is accessed via road from Mbeya city through Isyonje which is about 70 kilometers or another route is from Mbeya city through Chimala covering 103 kilometers to reach the park, from Njombe town to Ikonda then Makete you will travel for about165 kilometers to arrive to the park, a home to more than 350 wildflowers species such Lilies and fields of daisies, 45 endemic orchid species are found in Kitulo national park making this park a paradise for stunning array of spectacular butterflies that calls this park a home. Kitulo national park is at the elevation of 2600 meters approximately 8500 feet between the peaks of the Poroto, Living stone and Kipengere Mountains. From June to August Kitulo national park is entirely foggy and you can hardly have a clear visibility during the daytime, its fertile volcanic soil supports its vast montane grassland and montane forest. These small streams of the Nhumbe valley covered by the world tallest Juniper Forest towering up to fifty meters high forms the head waterfall for Nhumbe river known as Nhumbe waterfall with the height of approximately 100 meters, Nhumber river is one of the main tributaries of the Great Ruaha River. Nhumbe Valley and waterfall is about 20 kilometers away from Mwakipembo main gate. It will take at least one hour walking down the waterfall and up to picnic site allowing yourself to cool your body and capture some brilliant clicks while at Kitulo national park. Kitulo national park offers another spectacular waterfall known as Mwakipembo Waterfall located along the trails to Nhumbe valley 4 km from mwakipembo main gate, with the height of 8 meters, Mwakipembo waterfall offers stunning and breathtaking experience for you, the area around the Mwakipembo waterfall is characterized by orchid flowers, everlasting flowers, Erica plants and Clematopsis uhehensis making your visit a once in a life time experience.

Discover Mlivili cave located along Matamba Ridge after Mwakipembo water fall and Usalama cave which is about 8 kilometers away from Common works Junction – the road to Mbeya via Isyonje. The caves are believed to have been used as the hiding points by indigenous community of the Wawanji, Wakinga and Nyakyusa from Mwakaleli during those days of intertribal conflicts and wars. When to visit

 It largely depends on your interests, particularly whether you want to see the park’s famous wildflowers in bloom or prefer cooler, drier weather for hiking. Wildflower Season (November to April), This is the ideal time if you want to see Kitulo’s stunning array of wildflowers, often referred to as the “Serengeti of Flowers.” The blooming season peaks between December and March, making it the best period to experience the vibrant colors and unique plant species. Dry Season (June to October), If you prefer cooler temperatures and less rainfall, this period is great for hiking and exploring the park’s landscapes. Wildlife is also more easily spotted during the dry season. Overall, December to March offers the best combination of blooming flowers and good weather, but the dry season from June to October is also a good time to visit for outdoor activities.
