Saanane Island National Park

Saanane Island national park is within one of the islands in a huge Lake Victoria in Mwanza region, the only national park within the city that covers an area of about 2.20km². Saanane Island national Park got its name from its former owner who was known as Mzee Saanane Chawandi, this park was first established as an animal Zoo in 1964 and it was the first zoo in Tanzania with goals of promoting interests and conservation education in Wildlife, and the second objective was to promote recreation to the people of Mwanza. In 1964 and 1966 different wild animal species were introduced to the Island, such animals included Buffaloes, Bush bucks, Dik-Diks, Elephants, Elands. Impalas, Topis, Warthogs, Wildebeests, Zebras, and different Monkeys like Patas and Vervet, other animals include Giraffe, Porcupine and crocodiles that were kept freely unlike dangerous animals like Rhinos and Buffaloes were caged while others animals were in free range. Later in 1991 the island was recognized as a game reserve and then in the year 2013, Saanane Island was gazetted as a National Park Tanzania. Saanane Island national park is atleast 15 to 2o minutes boat ride from Mwanza city and it’s a pristine jungle within the city with lots of memorable adventures with unforgettable discoveries, here you can experience some Rocky hyrax, reptiles like monitor lizards, Agama lizards, tortoises crocodiles and snakes like Python can be seen here, some wild cats such as Leopards also can be spotted at the park, De-Brazza’s monkeys distinguishing the park as the only place where this monkey specie can be found. The best time to visit Saanane Island National Park in Tanzania is during the dry season, which runs from June to October. The temperatures are more moderate, and the animals are easier to spot as they gather around water sources. If you prefer fewer crowds, visiting during the shoulder months of May or November can also be a good option, as the park is still accessible, and the scenery remains lush.
