Mkomazi National Park

Mkomazi national park is one of the spectacular wildernesses in Africa which was established in 1951, it stayed unpopular until 1989 when the government of Tanzania re-examined the reserve status and designated it a national priority project recognizing its importance. It reveals its name from two words in Pare ethnic group language “Mko” and “Mathi” where Mko means a traditional wooden spoon and Mathi means water, this implies that water in the park is hardly enough to fill up the wooden spoon. The park is a home to more than 400bird species recorded from doves, hornbills, weavers, and guinea fowls are all present in large numbers as well as such striking species as the martial eagles and violate wood- hoopoes; it is also a place to sight the African roof mountain Kilimanjaro to the north-west “Africa highest summit”. Pare and Usambara mountains forms a dramatic backdrop to the park, the park is a home to many animal species making a common ground for migratory animal herds of elephants, Oryx, and zebras during wet season. Baobab trees, isolated rocky hills, savannah woodlands of umbrella acacias together with grey-green Nyika bushes and mbugas-shallow valleys of grasslands mark great scenery of this park. Giraffe, gerenuk, hartebeest, lesser kudu, elands, impala, buffalos, and numerous predators including lions, leopards and cheetahs are species recorded to possibly be sighted.
