Mount Meru, standing as Tanzania’s second highest Mountain and Africa’s fifth, is renowned for its stunning vistas and rich plant life. This mountain also provides an excellent chance for a walking safari, where you might encounter wildlife such as giraffes, buffaloes, baboons, elephants, antelopes, and colobus monkeys. As you ascend, the vegetation transitions from lush mountain rainforest to heather and moorland, eventually giving way to alpine desert. Along the trail, wildlife sightings become rarer, shifting the emphasis towards appreciating the breathtaking landscape.
Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), you will be met for a private transfer to Moshi. Once you arrive in Moshi, the remainder of the day is yours to relax and explore. Later, we will convene at the hotel for a pre-climb briefing and equipment check. Additionally, we will verify that you have the necessary medical coverage and travel insurance. Enjoy dinner and stay overnight in Arusha, with bed and breakfast included
We journey from Arusha to Momella Gate, where a brief registration process takes place. Following this, our trek starts with the protection of a fully armed ranger. As we progress, we'll encounter a variety of wildlife such as elephants, zebras, giraffes, monkeys, and antelope, with elephants frequently spotted along our path. We'll enjoy dinner and stay overnight at Miriakamba Hut. The trek covers a distance of 10 km and takes approximately 4 to 6 hours, passing through lush montane forest.
The trek from Miriakamba Hut to the saddle beneath Little Meru is relatively brief but involves a steep ascent. We'll make our way slowly along the ridge, offering stunning vistas of the Meru Crater and the striking Ash Cone. Following a hot lunch at Saddle Hut, there's an option for a short climb to the summit of Little Meru (3,820 meters) to catch breathtaking views just before sunset. We will spend the night and enjoy dinner at Saddle Hut. Distance: 8 km; Hiking Time: 3-5 hours; Habitat: Forest and Moorland.
We set off in the early hours, around 1:30 a.m., to tackle the steep ascent to Rhino Point (3,800 m.) and then continue to Cobra Point (4,350 m). We aim to reach the summit (4,566 m) just in time for sunrise, when there's a chance to glimpse Kilimanjaro Peak peeking above the clouds. The final stretch of the climb features a dramatic narrow ridgeline, flanked by the sheer inner cliffs and the sloping outer crater wall. After a brief rest and brunch at Saddle Hut, we proceed with the descent towards Meriakamba Hut. Distance: 5 km uphill and 13 km downhill. Hiking Duration: 10 – 12 hours. Terrain: Alpine Desert, Moorland, and Montane Forest.
We embark on a quick and scenic descent through open grasslands and diverse woodlands, offering a chance to spot wildlife, before arriving at Momella Gate by late morning. A vehicle will be ready at Momella Gate to transport you back to Moshi. The hike covers a distance of 10 km and typically takes 2-4 hours, passing through montane forest. Dinner and overnight accommodation in Moshi are included, with bed and breakfast provided.
